RABBI'S MESSAGE

Most of us have heard the old joke about the man who came to a Rabbi and asked to become a Kohein. After trying to convince him that he couldn't simply become a Kohein, the Rabbi asked the man why he wanted so desperately to achieve this status? The man responded because his father and grandfather were also Kohanim. When the Torah describes the Kohein Gadol, he is called “Gadol Meechav” -great among his brothers. The Chozeh Milublin points out that one of the responsibilities of the Kohein Gadol, derived from this language, was the need to feel the joy and sadness of other people. The responsibility of the Kohein Gadol was to empathize with the people, to strive to feel and connect with their emotions whether it was jubilation or sadness. Based on this explanation, to a certain degree we should all strive to emulate this mission of the Kohein Gadol. There are many among us who are currently or who have been sick. There are many among us who have lost a relative and have not had the ability to mourn in a normal fashion. There are many among us who have lost our livelihood and are very concerned about how they will pay their bills. There are those among us who are struggling with vital relationships magnified by the current crisis. There are those among us who are struggling with our mental health given the current circumstance. A community is defined as those who are connected, and we must reach out and let these people who are struggling know that during this difficult period, they are not alone. As a community there are plans in the works to help our friends who are going through this difficult time as best as we can. While there may be some limitations to the extent of our ability to help, there are no limitations to reaching out and checking in on those we are concerned about. May we follow the example of the Kohein Gadol.

-On a related note, earlier this week, the Shul launched the 2020 Gratitude Campaign in lieu of the annual dinner. While this will help drive much needed support  to the Shul, it is also a chance to recognize the people in our community who have made a difference in our lives. Now more than ever, it is important to display our Hakaras Hatov, while enabling the Shul to continue functioning.

-I want to remind the members of our community to fill out the United States Census form at https://my2020census.gov/ . Our participation helps to direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services. Results from the 2020 Census will be used to determine the number of seats each state has in Congress and our political representation at all levels of government. The pandemic has reminded us how important it is for these funds to potentially be available to our State and community. While the Census goes until July, please don’t delay as we have so many things on our mind these days and it is easy to forget this important task.

CONDOLENCES

We honor the memory of the following members of the armed forces and security forces of the United States who were recently killed in Iraq or Afghanistan: Army Sergeant, Christopher W. Curry, 23, Terre Haute, Indiana.

  • As the financial crisis deepens, the WO/Livingston Chesed Group is in the preliminary stages of launching an ambitious project that will try to ease the financial burden on those community members who are unemployed/underemployed. As we are blessed with many talented professionals in our community, we are compiling a list of individuals who would be willing to donate their services (e.g. medical, legal, financial, IT, therapy, etc). There will be a coordinator for each service, who will act as a liaison for the service and the individual requesting it. If you are interested in joining this initiative, please fill out this form  https://forms.gle/gkMCuxWwSmwnNQsr7 or reach out to any of us at WOLivGives@gmail.com, with your name, contact information and the service you could provide pro-bono.
