RABBI'S MESSAGE

On Tuesday, I shared my concern, via the shul WhatsApp Group, about playdates involving the children of our community.  I personally witnessed children of all ages not practicing safe social distancing, be it through socializing, playing ball, bike riding together or other activities.  The forecast for Shabbos is beautiful weather and I hope that we will all get a chance to get some air and go out for a stroll.  But I implore both adults and children to please adhere to the rules of social distancing so that the virus does not continue to spread in our community.  New Jersey is still suffering from significant illness and any of us can be silent carriers.  A simple playdate or gathering of adults can lead to spreading of this terrible virus. Additionally, as the news demonstrated this week, there is also concern that failing to adhere to social distancing rules will lead to a Chilul Hashem among our neighbors.

“How are you doing? No, really, how are you doing?” Most of the time we are satisfied with the first response and don’t ask the second question.  It is generally easier, but that second question can carry with it tremendous benefit.  Rebbi Akiva taught that the mitzvah of Veahavta Lereacha Kamocha is one of the most essential of the entire Torah. Rav Moshe Lev of Sosov zt”l once said that he learned to love his fellow Jew from an encounter that he observed of two non Jews.  He was once travelling and saw two villagers folicking and celebrating a joyous occasion with each other.  One man then turned to his friend and asked if he loved him? When the friend answered in the affirmative, the man asking the question responded, “How can you possibly love me if you don’t know what I am missing?”  At that moment Rav Moshe Lev explained, he understood what the mitzvah of Veahavta Lereacha Kamocha is all about.  To love someone means to understand what they are going through, and what it is they are in need of.  If we don't know what a person is missing, how they are struggling, we can't possibly love them.  There are times that we look at other people and feel connected to them, and enjoy their company, because all seems well with them.  It is pretty easy to care for someone when we don't know or have to listen to their troubles and burdens. To really love a fellow Jew means to reach out and understand their plight.  This is particularly true during these most challenging times.  On the surface, many of us put on a smile when we virtually communicate with others but we may be frightened and troubled beneath the surface.  I would like to suggest that this week we find at least one person out of our direct family that we call and check in on in fulfillment of this most powerful mitzvah.

May we all enjoy a safe and beautiful Shabbos.
