RABBI'S MESSAGE

In the beginning of Parshas Tazria, we are taught that one of the offerings a woman must bring after having given birth is a korban chatas, a sin offering.  This requirement seems puzzling. Why would a woman be required to bring a sin offering if she just performed one of the greatest mitzvos, bringing a life into the world? One of the suggestions offered by Chazal is that perhaps she said something particularly negative or took a vow during the difficulty of labor. This  can be viewed as a sin, for which she would need to atone via a korban.   One of the seminal moments of the kinos that we recite on Tisha B’aav morning is the singing of “Eiley Tziyon” to a very somber tune. The kina describes the wailing of Yerushalayim as a woman who is in childbirth.  The lesson from the kina begins with its juxtaposition, toward the very end of the morning Tisha B’av service. It is recited at a time when we begin to transform our mourning to consolation. Rav Soloveitchik zt”l explained the message of the kina as follows: Just as a woman in labor is willing to  withstand the pain, knowing that it will ultimately lead to the birth of her child, so too will Yerushalayim bear a child, namely redemption, as a result of her pain throughout the ages. This coming week we commemorate and celebrate Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut.  We pay tribute and remember all of those who gave their lives for Israel, from before its existence to today.  We remember those individuals who gave their lives so that the Jewish people can live under their own sovereignty, in their homeland, for the first time in two thousand years. We celebrate Yom Haatzmaut as a moment in history that has and continues to change our world and our own lives personally.  Over the last six weeks, many of us have changed our outlooks and have a newfound appreciation for that which is critical and important in our lives.  Our generation cannot even imagine what our lives would be like without the miracle of Israel’s existence.  It is for this reason that we thank and give praise to Hashem as we celebrate Yom Haatzmaut this coming week.
