RABBI'S MESSAGE

As a teenager I was tasked with being a gabbai in my shul, since my presence lowered the average age of attendees by a minimum of forty years.  I will never forget when I gave the sixth aliyah of Parshas Ki Savo to a kind, soft spoken blind man.  I didn't realize that the sixth aliyah contained the “tochecha”, the harsh rebuke, a warning to the Jewish people of what would tragically happen if we did not follow the Torah.  I thought I was honoring this man by giving him the sixth aliyah, which on any other Shabbos would have been prestigious.  He was so insulted when he realized what was happening, that my Rabbi stepped in and said it would be his honor to take the aliyah, comforting the blind man. Our shul custom is to give this aliyah to the Baal Korei so as not to insult anyone else. The rebuke is difficult to stomach. Toward the end of the admonition, the Torah says that it would take place as a result of the people not serving Hashem with simcha- with joy. During this month of Elul, as we feel the momentum of the Yamim Noraim soon upon us, we take stock of our actions and attitudes toward Hashem, His Torah, and our observance, let us strive to impart joy into our mitzvah observance. There are times when we may perform a mitzvah, but may feel as if it is a burden or a hassle. Instilling a sense of simcha in our mitzvah observance takes our spirituality to a different level, one which is fulfilling and closer to Hashem and His Torah. Good Shabbos!

- Please join us for a Pre- Selichot Kimzits program with Rabbi Blocl, this Motzei Shabbat at 12:00AM. Click here for more info.
