RABBI'S MESSAGE

In Parshas Vayikra the Torah uses the term mitzvah in reference to a sin committed by an individual.  What is the implication? Did the individual sin through the performance of a mitzvah?  Rav Levi Yitzchak Mibarditchiv zt”l points out that the Torah is teaching the importance of humility and the danger of inflating one’s ego. He explains that Hashem detests arrogance. When a person sins, they can rectify their act by doing teshuva, repentance. Yet when one flaunts their good deeds for others to see in a tasteless and provocative manner, they are in essence forfeiting their mitzvah and committing an aveirah.  A number of years ago when Rabbi Paysach Krohn visited our community, he spoke about the importance of feeling good about doing mitzvos. There is a distinction between one feeling good about their actions and serving as an example for others, as opposed to flaunting their accomplishments even in the area of mitzvah observance. Good Shabbos!

Please join me tomorrow night at 8:30PM for the Shabbat Hagadol Drasha. You can join in person (sign-up here) or via Livestream (https://vimeo.com/event/812229).
