RABBI'S MESSAGE

If the Jewish slave decides to stay in servitude, his master pierces his ear as a sign of his long term commitment to slavery.  Rashi explains that the ear was chosen by Hashem to be pierced, because it heard at Har Sinai that the Jewish people were to be servants to Hashem and not to anyone else. The Lev Simcha zt”l elaborates on Rashi’s explanation and suggests that for the slave, the message of Har Sinai stayed in his ear, and as such did not penetrate further into his body, to his heart.  This idea serves as a gentle reminder that it is not sufficient for us to listen to the words of Torah, without taking those words to heart. Good Shabbos!
