RABBI'S MESSAGE

When the Torah tells us that Lot accompanied Avraham on his journey from Charan, it immediately informs us, in the very same pasuk, that Avraham was 75 years old at the time. The Kli Yakar comments that Avraham’s age is mentioned here for an important reason. While on the surface an observer may conclude that Lot went with Avraham altruistically, the Torah tells us Avraham’s age in this very pasuk, to inform us that Lot traveled with Avraham precisely because of his age.  Lot, aware that Avraham did not have children, stayed with Avraham so that he could inherit him. While Avraham left his homeland in fulfillment of Hashem’s wishes, Lot left his homeland with ulterior motives in mind. This lesson is a gentle reminder for us to be conscious and honest about our own motivations.
