RABBI'S MESSAGE

When Hashem punished Adam Harishon, He explained that  the punishment came as a  result of Adam’s  listening to Chava. We extrapolate that Hashem gives us the ability to hear, but it is our mind that decides what to listen to. The Midrash Rabbah explains that there are four possible outcomes when words  enter into one's ears.  The first possibility is a person who listens to what he or she is told and loses out, such as Adam Harishon who mistakenly listened to Chava and sinned. The second possibility is a person who listens and is rewarded, like Avraham who listened and followed that which Sorah told him about Yitzchak and Yishmael.  The third possibility is a person who does not listen and is rewarded, like Yosef who did not listen to the overtures made by the wife of Potiphar, and preserved his destiny.  The fourth is the person or people who fail to listen and end up losing out, like the Bnei Yisrael when they rebelled against Hashem by lacking to follow in His way.  Most of us are fortunate to have the ability to hear.  This ability is a gift that we should never take for granted.  While we may not always be able to choose what we hear, it is so important to remember that we are granted the choice of activating when we want to listen.  Good Shabbos!

-As we welcome Shabbos Breishis, we bid farewell and Tzeischem L’shalom to Rabbi Zvi and Robin Karpel who are moving to Florida this week.  Rabbi Karpel has been the chaplain at Daughters of Israel for decades, ensuring the residents were spiritually connected to Judaism.  Thank you to the Karpel’s for their years of service to our community, we wish them well in their new home.

CHESED OPPORTUNITIES

  • As the financial crisis deepens, the WO/Livingston Chesed Group is in the preliminary stages of launching an ambitious project that will try to ease the financial burden on those community members who are unemployed/ underemployed. As we are blessed with many talented professionals in our community, we are compiling a list of individuals who would be willing to donate their services (e.g. medical, legal, financial, IT, therapy, etc). There will be a coordinator for each service, who will act as a liaison for the service and the individual requesting it. If you are interested in joining this initiative, please fill out this form  https://forms.gle/gkMCuxWwSmwnNQsr7 or reach out to any of us at WOLivGives@gmail.com, with your name, contact information and the service you could provide pro-bono.
  • In an effort to assist individuals who are in need of job search support during this economic downturn, the Livingston and West Orange communities have revived the Jewish Job Network (JJN).  JJN is an informal volunteer organization serving the Jewish community in our local area.  The support includes guidance in resume writing, interviewing, career counseling, networking (including LinkedIn), starting a new business, learning how to consult and job retraining.  If you are in need of assistance or if you are interested in volunteering, please go to JJN's website http://jewishjobnetwork.com. The volunteers we seek are people with knowledge/experience in the above areas, including those with contacts in their respective fields who will be able to connect job seekers for industry or position specific advice and potential job placement. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions on the above, please reach out to Fernand Schoppig - schoppig@fsassociates.com. We hope we can help those in need.
