RABBI'S MESSAGE

I have a request.  When we take a bite of the pomegranate this Friday night, I would ask you to keep the following observation of the Alshich zt”l in mind.   He says that regardless of how dirty it may become on the outside, because of its hard exterior, it remains clean inside.  Moreover, the seeds are so compacted together that even when the fruit is cut the seeds  don't simply fall out, they remain connected and linked.  I could not help but think of this beautiful mashal when it comes to our community and these Yamim Noraim.  Even though we cannot be together in the same building, even though we are assembled across the community, we remain united as one kehillah, like the seeds of a pomegranate.

These Yamim Noraim, during the Covid Pandemic will truly be memorable.  Yet, context is also important.  We have had a challenging year.  Many have lost family and friends to this terrible illness, and we have spent a considerable amount of time concerned about our health.  When we consider the challenges that our ancestors have faced over the generations however, the inconvenience of being spread out in different locations throughout the community to daven, is not so concerning.  Yes, we won't be davening with the same people we are accustomed to each year, we may not be listening to the same chazan, or Baal Tokea, but we will be united as a kehilla together spiritually.  I cannot even begin to describe the amount of work that individuals, volunteers put in to make these Yamim Noraim special in our community.  I am truly in awe of all of your work on behalf of the tzibur.   Please join me over Rosh Hashana in personally saying thank you to all of the people who stepped up in their own way, in order to make all of this possible for our shul family.  May Hashem pay you for your time and devotion to our shul and Klal Yisrael with a year of good health, success, and growth in the year 5781.  May Hashem bless our entire community with a year of  good health and success for all of us and all of Klal Yisrael.

CHESED OPPORTUNITIES

  • As the financial crisis deepens, the WO/Livingston Chesed Group is in the preliminary stages of launching an ambitious project that will try to ease the financial burden on those community members who are unemployed/ underemployed. As we are blessed with many talented professionals in our community, we are compiling a list of individuals who would be willing to donate their services (e.g. medical, legal, financial, IT, therapy, etc). There will be a coordinator for each service, who will act as a liaison for the service and the individual requesting it. If you are interested in joining this initiative, please fill out this form  https://forms.gle/gkMCuxWwSmwnNQsr7 or reach out to any of us at WOLivGives@gmail.comwith your name, contact information and the service you could provide pro-bono.
  • In an effort to assist individuals who are in need of job search support during this economic downturn, the Livingston and West Orange communities have revived the Jewish Job Network (JJN).  JJN is an informal volunteer organization serving the Jewish community in our local area.  The support includes guidance in resume writing, interviewing, career counseling, networking (including LinkedIn), starting a new business, learning how to consult and job retraining.  If you are in need of assistance or if you are interested in volunteering, please go to JJN's website http://jewishjobnetwork.comThe volunteers we seek are people with knowledge/experience in the above areas, including those with contacts in their respective fields who will be able to connect job seekers for industry or position specific advice and potential job placement. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions on the above, please reach out to Fernand Schoppig schoppig@fsassociates.comWe hope we can help those in need.
