RABBI'S MESSAGE

When the Chafetz Chaim zt”l became older and had a more difficult time walking, he became accustomed to traveling by wagon, even relatively short distances.  One Friday he returned home from using the Mikvah and began dancing as he entered the front door.  Those in the house at the time were pleasantly surprised by what appeared to be his random upbeat behavior. When asked why he was so joyful, the Chofetz Chaim explained that he had just fulfilled the mitzvah of paying a worker on the day of his service, when he paid the wagon driver who returned him home. He explained that it was a merit to fulfill that particular mitzvah.  The lesson for us during this month of Elul is to reflect upon and re engage our mitzvah experience.  While throughout the year we tend to observe certain mitzvos out of rote, the month of Elul affords us the opportunity to reevaluate the impact of each and every mitzvah observance upon our way of life and sense of fulfillment.

CHESED OPPORTUNITIES

  • As the financial crisis deepens, the WO/Livingston Chesed Group is in the preliminary stages of launching an ambitious project that will try to ease the financial burden on those community members who are unemployed/ underemployed. As we are blessed with many talented professionals in our community, we are compiling a list of individuals who would be willing to donate their services (e.g. medical, legal, financial, IT, therapy, etc). There will be a coordinator for each service, who will act as a liaison for the service and the individual requesting it. If you are interested in joining this initiative, please fill out this form  https://forms.gle/gkMCuxWwSmwnNQsr7 or reach out to any of us at WOLivGives@gmail.comwith your name, contact information and the service you could provide pro-bono.
  • In an effort to assist individuals who are in need of job search support during this economic downturn, the Livingston and West Orange communities have revived the Jewish Job Network (JJN).  JJN is an informal volunteer organization serving the Jewish community in our local area.  The support includes guidance in resume writing, interviewing, career counseling, networking (including LinkedIn), starting a new business, learning how to consult and job retraining.  If you are in need of assistance or if you are interested in volunteering, please go to JJN's website http://jewishjobnetwork.comThe volunteers we seek are people with knowledge/experience in the above areas, including those with contacts in their respective fields who will be able to connect job seekers for industry or position specific advice and potential job placement. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions on the above, please reach out to Fernand Schoppig - schoppig@fsassociates.comWe hope we can help those in need.
