RABBI'S MESSAGE

A few years ago when I was attending a family simcha in Israel, I was awed by something beautiful that I saw at the end of the meal.  If I wasn't lingering in conversation with a family member, I would have missed out on a great lesson in life.  While the caterer was cleaning up, as the attendees were going home, I saw a woman walking around the tables and collecting the scraps of bread that remained.  She proceeded to place all of the scraps in a bag.  I asked someone what she was doing and was told that she wanted to show honor to the bread and dispose of it in a dignified fashion.  The Rambam in Hilchos Melachim expounds upon the commandment found in our Parsha not to destroy the trees of a conquered city.  He says that this commandment not only applies to trees, but to other items of value as well.  One is prohibited from tearing clothing or vessels, destroying buildings or wasting food.  This mitzvah applies when one does these activities for a destructive purpose.  We live in a generation where food is present in abundance like no time in history before us.  Often, we take its availability and value for granted.  As Elul has arrived, let us reflect and appreciate the blessings Hashem regularly provides for us and be more cognizant of that which we may waste.

CHESED OPPORTUNITIES

  • As the financial crisis deepens, the WO/Livingston Chesed Group is in the preliminary stages of launching an ambitious project that will try to ease the financial burden on those community members who are unemployed/ underemployed. As we are blessed with many talented professionals in our community, we are compiling a list of individuals who would be willing to donate their services (e.g. medical, legal, financial, IT, therapy, etc). There will be a coordinator for each service, who will act as a liaison for the service and the individual requesting it. If you are interested in joining this initiative, please fill out this form  https://forms.gle/gkMCuxWwSmwnNQsr7 or reach out to any of us at WOLivGives@gmail.comwith your name, contact information and the service you could provide pro-bono.
  • In an effort to assist individuals who are in need of job search support during this economic downturn, the Livingston and West Orange communities have revived the Jewish Job Network (JJN).  JJN is an informal volunteer organization serving the Jewish community in our local area.  The support includes guidance in resume writing, interviewing, career counseling, networking (including LinkedIn), starting a new business, learning how to consult and job retraining.  If you are in need of assistance or if you are interested in volunteering, please go to JJN's website http://jewishjobnetwork.comThe volunteers we seek are people with knowledge/experience in the above areas, including those with contacts in their respective fields who will be able to connect job seekers for industry or position specific advice and potential job placement. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions on the above, please reach out to Fernand
