RABBI'S MESSAGE

The tefillah of “Lecha Dodi”, which we recite when welcoming the Shabbos every Friday night, begins with the word shamor (keep), referring to the observance of the prohibitions of melacha; calculated labor activity, which  is prohibited on Shabbos. The Gemara tells us that the second word of Lecha Dodi, Zachor (remember), represents our obligation to actively honor the day of Shabbos.  These two words are used respectively both times that the Aseres Hadibros (Ten Commandments) are mentioned in the Torah, the second occasion being in our parsha. Rav Yakov Moshe Charlop zt”l finds a deeper insight to the choice of the word shamor. He connects shamor to the use of the word in a different tense by Yaakov Avinu in Parshas Vayeshev.  When Yosef told his brothers of his dreams, they reacted negatively and were jealous of him. However, the Torah says that their father Yaakov “shamar” the dream.  Rashi explains that Yaakov was sitting and looking forward to when the dream would come to fruition.  Rabbi Charlop explains that the same is true when it comes to observing Shabbos.  Hashem wants us to eagerly wait and anticipate the day of Shabbos all week long.  As we welcome Shabbos Nachamu, let us internalize this message for all future Shabbasos.  Whatever the week may bring us, let us try to look forward to the day of Shabbos as a holy day full of rest and uplifting significance in our lives. Good Shabbos!

-Like every year after Tisha B'Av, I will be out of the office on vacation until Friday, August 28th. Please contact Rabbi Sharbat for any matters that are urgent or time sensitive.

CHESED OPPORTUNITIES

  • As the financial crisis deepens, the WO/Livingston Chesed Group is in the preliminary stages of launching an ambitious project that will try to ease the financial burden on those community members who are unemployed/
underemployed. As we are blessed with many talented professionals in our community, we are compiling a list of individuals who would be willing to donate their services (e.g. medical, legal, financial, IT, therapy, etc). There will be a coordinator for each service, who will act as a liaison for the service and the individual requesting it. If you are interested in joining this initiative, please fill out this form
https://forms.gle/gkMCuxWwSmwnNQsr7 or reach out to any of us at WOLivGives@gmail.comwith your name, contact information and the service you could provide pro-bono.
  • In an effort to assist individuals who are in need of job search support during this economic downturn, the Livingston and West Orange communities have revived the Jewish Job Network (JJN).  JJN is an informal volunteer organization serving the Jewish community in our local area.  The support includes guidance in resume writing, interviewing, career counseling, networking (including LinkedIn), starting a new business, learning how to consult and job retraining.  If you are in need of assistance or if you are interested in volunteering, please go to JJN's website http://jewishjobnetwork.comThe volunteers we seek are people with knowledge/experience in the above areas, including those with contacts in their respective fields who will be able to connect job seekers for industry or position specific advice and potential job placement. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions on the above, please reach out to Fernand Schoppig -
schoppig@fsassociates.com.  We hope we can help those in need.
