RABBI'S MESSAGE

Over the millenia, as the Jewish people have journeyed through this exile, we have faced Anti- Semitism at some point in virtually all of our experiences.  This past week we witnessed another episode with the shocking words of a professional football player.  While so many in America have correctly spoken up against racism and hate over these last few months, few if any of those voices were heard denouncing the sickening posting praising the thoughts of Hitler yim”sh.  It is noteworthy and disappointing that the voices raised were overwhelmingly Jewish.  Bilaam was correct, we are a nation who dwells alone.  At this time of year, let us focus on settling our internal communal and personal squabbles, and recognize that we truly need each other.

Yesterday we began the period of the “Three Weeks”; a time dedicated to national mourning for the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash and our exile from our beloved homeland. The Torah in Parshas Pinchas relates the directives as to how the land of Israel was first divided among the tribes of the Jewish people.  It is interesting to note that this process took place in the desert, before the people ever entered the land.   One may wonder if it would not make more sense for the appropriation to take place after the people arrived in their homeland, where each tribe could actually see the land that they would possess. Rav Yaakov Shimshon Mishtipoka zt”l explains that when assets are divided there tends to be disagreement and bitterness on some level.  Hashem wanted the Jewish people to experience this challenge in the desert so that they would not fight once they arrived in the land. These past four months have reminded us of the fragility of life and the essential need for community.  May these three weeks serve as a unifying time for our community and the Jewish people.

CHESED OPPORTUNITIES

  • As the financial crisis deepens, the WO/Livingston Chesed Group is in the preliminary stages of launching an ambitious project that will try to ease the financial burden on those community members who are unemployed/underemployed. As we are blessed with many talented professionals in our community, we are compiling a list of individuals who would be willing to donate their services (e.g. medical, legal, financial, IT, therapy, etc). There will be a coordinator for each service, who will act as a liaison for the service and the individual requesting it. If you are interested in joining this initiative, please fill out this form  https://forms.gle/gkMCuxWwSmwnNQsr7 or reach out to any of us at WOLivGives@gmail.com, with your name, contact information and the service you could provide pro-bono.
  • In an effort to assist individuals who are in need of job search support during this economic downturn, the Livingston and West Orange communities have revived the Jewish Job Network (JJN).  JJN is an informal volunteer organization serving the Jewish community in our local area.  The support includes guidance in resume writing, interviewing, career counseling, networking (including LinkedIn), starting a new business, learning how to consult and job retraining.  If you are in need of assistance or if you are interested in volunteering, please go to JJN's website http://jewishjobnetwork.comThe volunteers we seek are people with knowledge/experience in the above areas, including those with contacts in their respective fields who will be able to connect job seekers for industry or position specific advice and potential job placement. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions on the above, please reach out to Fernand Schoppig  - schoppig@fsassociates.com.  We hope we can help those in need.
