RABBI'S MESSAGE
What’s in a name? The nasi of the tribe of Naftali was named Achira ben Aynan. The Torah informs us that he was the last Nasi, prince of a tribe, to offer a Korban at the inauguration of the Mishkan. This is perplexing since the tribe of Naftali was never listed as the last tribe, why would the nasi of this tribe be last to offer a korban? Rav Chanoch of Alexander zt”l explains that what transpired here is linked to the name of Achira’s father, Aynan. The word Aynan contains the word Ayin which means eye, meaning that Achira was a “tov ayin”, had a good eye, a kind eye, and allowed others to go before him. What an important lesson for us about life in general when it comes to the way we judge others, and a critical observation given our current climate.
-This week has been quite difficult for all of us as Americans. We are reminded that we must look at every human being as being created in the image of God, and deserve to be treated as such. We are also reminded that like everything in life, we can never paint with a broad brush. We have all been moved by policemen throughout the country kneeling with peaceful protestors. May our country and all of its inhabitants be blessed by Hashem with peace and respect.
Over the last week, I have been in touch with my friend Pastor Douglas Adams of the Joy Church here in West Orange. I invited Pastor Adams to join me in conversation this Sunday night at 8pm on the Shul’s Zoom room. I invited his membership as well, we look forward to a deep conversation about healing our community of humanity during this time. Mayor Parisi has graciously accepted our invitation to join us as well. Please join us this Sunday night at 8pm. Click here for more info.
-After twelve long weeks of davening without a minyan, this Shabbos we return to Teffila Betzibur with the start of backyard minyanim. Please be mindful of our neighbors and our personal safety when participating in a minyan.
-The time has finally come for us to return to gathering together in Tefillah. You should have received the email from Rabbi Zwickler regarding backyard Minyanim. As we will begin the process of returning to communal prayer with the commencement of a first phase, this Friday night June 5th, in various backyards throughout our community. While we are excited about this development, we remain cautious as the challenge of COVID-19 spread is still present. For more info click here . You can go to https://aabjd.org/minyan to add your minyan to the list.
