RABBI'S MESSAGE

There are a number of reasons offered for the custom of reading Megillas Rus on Shavuos.  One of the most known is that one of the fundamental lessons of the Torah, chesed, kindness is exemplified in the Megilla through the character of Rus. Rav Tzvi Pesach Frank zt”l suggests another reason.  Megillas Rus teaches us the critical importance of Torah She’beal Peh, the Oral Law. Rus was a Moabite who converted to Judaism.  Yet, the Torah tells us very clearly in a pasuk that a potential convert from Moav cannot be accepted into the family of our people. How then was Rus accepted as a convert?  The Gemara explains that the Rabbis derived from the language of the pasuk that it is a male from the nation of Moav who is not accepted, but a female convert may indeed join our tribe.  This law is derived from the fact that the pasuk speaks in the masculine but not in the feminine. Subsequently,  Rus became the matriarch of the Davidic kingdom from which the Mashiach comes.  Without the analysis of the Gemara, we would never have accepted Rus as a convert and our history and destiny would be very different.  Rav Frank explains that it is for this reason that we read Megillas Rus on Shavuos. We are to remember as we learn Torah that without the Oral Law, we cannot understand the Written Law.  Chag Sameach to all!

SHAVUOT

  • Don't forget to make an Eruv Tavshilin before the Chag begins. In order to allow foods prepared on Shavuot to be eaten on Shabbat, the Halacha requires an Eruv Tavshilin to be made.
  • Yizkor: As we approach Shavuot, we recognize how difficult it will be for those who will be saying Yizkor.  The simple routine of coming to shul and remembering our loved ones, surrounded by friends and family, has been upended. Nonetheless, Yizkor can and should be said on Shabbat without a minyan. In addition, it is customary to pledge Tzedakah in memory of departed loved ones while saying Yizkor. Please click here to contribute to the Yizkor Fund. To download the Yizkor service, click here
