RABBI'S MESSAGE

The jokes are abundant but as the saying goes “there is a little truth in every joke”. People are joking and talking about the amount of pounds many of us are putting these days due to the quarantine.  One of the blessings that is bestowed upon us if we keep Hashem’s mitzvos, as is mentioned in the beginning of Parshas Bechukosai, is that we will be able to eat until we are satiated.  Rashi explains that this means a person will become full after only eating a small amount. One of the great Chasidic masters of Kotzk, Rebbi Moshe Michel MiBiala zt”l wondered why the Torah would make such a stipulation.  If we are blessed with an abundance of food by keeping the mitzvos faithfully, why would there be a need to be satiated with only a small amount? He explains that Torah is teaching us that even if one has the means to eat an abundance, one should be measured and do so in healthy fashion. It is important during this challenging time that we focus on elements of our physical and mental health.  The other day someone told me that when they leave their house they only do so in the car and have had no exercise in months. As long as we adhere to social distancing, we are all encouraged to walk outside for the sake of our physical and mental health.  Please remember that strict adherence to social distancing rules has literally saved lives in our community and beyond.  This applies to our children just as it does to adults. Good Shabbos!

Dear Friends,

We hope that you and your family are doing well.  As you’ve noticed, the State of New Jersey has begun to relax some of the Covid-19 restrictions and yesterday Governor Murphy opened the beaches of New Jersey.  Like you, my family and I are anxious to get outside and I am certainly looking forward to joining together as a minyan once again.  With that in mind, I want to share the following update:

1)    Please understand that although quarantine is affecting us socially, many medical questions remain unanswered. This week, we saw new issues arising about the spread of the disease particularly when it comes to children.  During last week’s OU conference call with Rabbis and lay leaders, Dr. Fauci stressed that the medical community is uncertain if people with antibodies can get the virus again. We are ALL still in danger and need to continue with our communal precautions. I have seen members of the community relaxing social distancing particularly when it comes to children.  We must not put our guard down.
2)    Our Shul will be following the OU guidelines released last week, which require at minimum a 14-day waiting period from when government and health officials allow us to congregate for religious services and to begin any form of davening.  In the interim, I implore you not to congregate for any type of organized davening.
3)    This guidance includes outdoor minyanim.
4)    The Shul has assembled a task force charged with a safe and healthy reopening of the building.  The group met this week and we will be providing further updates next week, at the Shul membership meeting on May 26, and in the upcoming issue of The Chronicle.

May we all continue to stay safe and thereby rid our community of any potential danger from COVID 19 and its after effects.
