Chesed Shel Emes

Rabbi Eliezer Zwickler, Rabbinic Authority

Rabbi Shmuel Tokayer, Chairman

The kindness performed by a sacred society is designated by the term "chesed shel emes" - genuine generosity. The AABJ&D Chesed Shel Emes Society has been functioning for a number of years and has provided invaluable service to member families at times of bereavement. The Society recognizes that at the time of bereavement, the immediate family is subject to emotional stress and may find it difficult to handle the details of the funeral, burial and "shiva." The Society steps in to ease that stress. It coordinates the services of the Telephone Squad and Chesed Network together with its own subcommittees.

One of the special services our Shul's Chesed Shel Emes Society provides is known by the Aramaic term "Chevra Kadisha." In the event of a death in the family, and to initiate the services of the Society, the following procedure is recommended:

  1. Notify the SHUL OFFICE. The staff will call Rabbi Zwickler and Rabbi Tokayer and notify anyone else who needs to know. The Chevra will then proceed in consultation with the family.
  2. If the Shul office is closed, call the people on the following list in order. When you have made contact with ONE person, there is no need to call further. All matters will be handled from that point on in consultation with the family.
